This two-day hands-on workshop with Curt will explore ways to make surface textures on clay using a blowtorch, sodium silicate, a pottery wheel and more. How do you create a surface that people just want to reach out and touch? How can you introduce a sense of randomness with techniques that allow for each piece to be unique and impossible to duplicate? On day one participants will follow along with Curt as he demonstrates the path he took starting with the lightest surface textures to deep, rough, tree bark and volcanic rock textures. All made on the pottery wheel. Day 2 will explore ways to not only push these textures even further but to also explore ways to introduce more advanced twists on the techniques covered day one.

Curt is the ceramicist behind Hammerly Ceramics. Born and raised outside of Denver colorado he went to CU Boulder for an undergrad in Architecture and then worked for the university running a fabrication lab for a decade. He started working with clay as art therapy in 2012 after a car accident that left him with a broken neck. Getting his start taking classes at a local Co-op (The Boulder Potters’ Guild) he quickly became and apprentice working out of the guild, then built a 140 square foot home studio and only a few years later opened a 1400 square-foot studio of his own. A designer first and an artist second he combines age-old ceramics techniques with a knowledge of current technology and digital fabrication.
